The nominal 12" wide x 16" high insulated metal speaker backcan (containing a 1 inch thick, 6 pcf, ceramic fiber blankert on 5 sides of the backcan interior) is installed in a stud cavity and attached to the wood framing member with (4) #8 x 1-1/4" long screws (one screw in each corner as shown in the installation instructions). A Sonance Flex Bracket is installed, positioned over the backcan opening, and serves as a guide for the gypsum board installer when cutting the speaker opening. The Flex Bracket is nailed, screwed or stapled to the framing members in accordance with the Sonance Flex Bracket Installation Instructions.
NOTE: Cavity insulation is not required in this wall assembly to achieve the 1-hr fire-resistance rating.
The framed wall is faced on both sides with 5/8-inch thick Type X gypsum board (complying with ASTM C1396) fastened to the framing members with #6, 1-5/8" long, Type W, gypsum board screws spaced 8 inches on-center around the perimeter and 12 inches on-center at intermediate framing members. Gypsum board joints were bedded and taped with gypsum tape and joint compound complying with ASTM C475. The fastener heads were also covered with the same joint compound.
NOTE: The inclusion of a speaker or a metal face plate is required in this in-wall assembly to achieve the 1-hr fire-resistance rating.
Conditions of Use: The Sonance Universal insulated rectangular metal speaker backcan (Part No. 92807) with either an installed speaker or a metal face plate over the backcan opening, is suitable for use as a membrane penetration in 1-hour fire-resistant rated wall construction consisting of nominal 2 x 4 wood or equivalent wood or metal framing members spaced a maximum of 16 inches on-center maximum.
