System Description: The Smoke Guard Model 600 (M600) System creates a code-compliant smoke and draft control assembly when paired with common fire-rated elevator doors. The Smoke Guard M600 System screen consists of a reinforced, transparent, polyamide or polyimide film. The film edge is connected to flexible magnetic strips which adhere to ferrous metal rails as the system deploys creating a tight seal. The Smoke Guard M600 System is designed for application for a maximum hoistway opening of 100-1/4 inches wide, and a maximum ceiling height of 120 inches. Additional components are required for openings greater than 55-1/4 inches wide.
The Smoke Guard M600 System includes a control system consisting of a printed circuit board containing the control, alarm and diagnostic logic. The M600 System uses standard building power and features a continuously charged DC battery backup system that can operate the system for up to seven days without the presence of AC for recharging.
System Operation: The Smoke Guard M600 System is designed specifically to protect elevator openings and the shaft from vertical smoke migration. The system will deploy only when the smoke detector in front of that particular elevator opening goes into alarm.
As the lobby smoke detector goes into alarm, the elevator sill automatically returns to the recall floor. If an elevator occupant were to encounter a deployed M600 System, a screen rewind switch located on both sides of the screen will allow for egress. If smoke is still actively being detected, the screen will then redeploy to seal the opening.
Installation: All Smoke Guard M600 system units are installed by factory recognized personnel. There is minimal preparation work. Installation requires a clear, plumb, unobstructed wall surface above the hoistway door, 120v AC power and a UL 268 conforming smoke detector. Installation of smoke doors shall be in accordance with NFPA 105.

aThis assembly was tested without an artificial bottom seal. The assembly may be installed in areas where pressurization is provided to control smoke movement in accordance with Section 4.3.2 of NFPA 105 (2019) and for hoistway opening protection and lobby doorways as allowed in Chapter 30 of the IBC.
