The 3M™ Interam™ E-5, E-50 and ES-5 Series Mats are endothermic blankets/mats designed to wrap around items requiring protection from fire exposure, such as electrical systems and structural steel in fire-resistant assemblies/systems. The flexible felt-like material is made up of a combination of fibers and an inorganic endothermic material.
The endothermic property of the E-Mats allows it to retard specified heat penetration by chemically absorbing heat energy. When exposed to high temperatures, Interam™ E-Mats release chemically-bound water to cool the outer surfaces of the wrap material and retard heat transfer.
The total thickness or number of 3M™ Interam™ E-Mat layers employed on a fire-resistant assembly will dictate the total amount of protection. E-mats are produced in two different thicknesses, which enable the user to meet the desired fire protection requirements with the fewest number of layers. The numbering system/product name for the mat corresponds to the thickness of the material as shown in the brochure titled
Interam™ E-5 Series Mats Endothermic Ceramic Fiber Blanket. The E-Mat product is also described in the following documents:
- 3M™ Interam™ E-5A Series Mat Flexible Wrap for Industrial Fire Protection product brochure;
- Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for 3M™ Interam™E-5A Series Mat;
- 3M™ Interam™ Endothermic Mat E-5A-4 – Product Information;
